A recent repair, step by step

Cracked tile comes from improper installation and materials selection, or from thermal expansion and movement of the shower itself. On this one, the tile had been butted directly into tile at the changes of plane. ANSI specifications require silicone there, but with the tile pressed tight into the corner there was no room to install the caulk properly, so what was in the joint was visual rather than functional. Tight joints across a wall are fine. Tile butted into tile at a change of plane is not, and that was the cause of the failure: poor installation method, not a caulk or grout failure.
Precision tile removal. The waterproofing behind the tile damages easily during removal, and once it does it has to be repaired or replaced. We repair where we can, because it saves you money, and we don’t when it would leave you with a compromised shower. This shower was built with cement board and a roll-on waterproofing; the tile came out carefully, then the backer board was cleaned up.
Preserving intact waterproofing. Before new waterproofing went on, we sealed the perimeter of the untouched tile to seal in the waterproofing that was still sound. On this shower we then brushed on a liquid waterproof membrane per manufacturer specs at the proper thickness.
Hand fitting of the tiles. Because the original tile was butted tight, a same-size replacement wouldn’t fit. We hand-polished the edges of the new tile with a diamond grit pad until it did, then set and grouted.

Can you repair just a few cracked or loose tiles?
Often yes. But cracked or loose tile usually points to something underneath: either the install and materials were wrong, or the substrate has settled and moved. We find the cause first. Tile removal also damages waterproofing easily, so whatever we uncover gets repaired or replaced before the new tile goes on.
Do I need a repair or a full replacement?
