Heated tile floors — radiant floor heating

Tile is the ideal surface for radiant floor heating: it conducts and holds warmth beautifully, so a heated tile floor takes the chill off a bathroom or kitchen on cold Upstate mornings. We install electric in-floor heating systems under the tile, during the substrate prep. It’s a premium upgrade that pays you back every winter, and a popular add-on for bathroom remodels and custom showers.

The difference is in the prep

A tile floor is only as good as what’s underneath it, and that’s where most floor problems actually start. Before any tile goes down, we make sure the substrate is right in three ways the industry standards spell out:

• Flat enough for the tile. The bigger the tile, the flatter the floor has to be (the standard tightens to about 1/8″ over 10 feet for large-format). A wavy floor shows up as lippage — uneven tile edges you can catch with a toe — so we flatten it first.
• Stiff enough not to flex. We check the structure and reinforce it where it needs it. TCNA standards are 1 1/8″ substrate to properly support tile.
• Crack-isolated over concrete. A hairline crack in a slab will telegraph straight up through tile. An uncoupling or crack-isolation membrane lets the slab move underneath without splitting your floor.

Then we set every tile with full mortar coverage underneath, so your floor — heated or not — performs as good as it looks for the long haul.
